I wasn’t initially interested in David Beckham. I knew he was famous and that Victoria was a Spice Girl, but I was more into football. My interest in Liverpool grew after a friend started running the football club there. The opportunity to work on this movie came after Leonardo DiCaprio recommended me to David Beckham. Despite my initial hesitation, meeting David and his wife Victoria changed my perspective.
Before agreeing to work on the documentary, I dove deep into David’s life, researched extensively, and hired a team to help with the story and archival aspects. The film initially focused on working-class England but shifted to a story about family, including his relationships with his parents, Manchester United, and Victoria and the kids.
The film highlights the intense press scrutiny David faced, his mental strength, and the challenges he and Victoria faced in their marriage. Both were open to discussing the uncomfortable aspects of their relationship for the documentary.
David’s discomfort during interviews added depth to the film, showing a vulnerable side of him that the audience may not have expected. The editing process was crucial in crafting an emotional and entertaining love story that resonates with viewers.
Despite initial resistance, David allowed filming of his real life, highlighting his passion for beekeeping. The premiere was nerve-wracking for both David and Victoria, but the reception of the film has been overwhelmingly positive.
