Ship Collides with Baltimore Bridge, Resulting in “Catastrophic Collapse”
Our thoughts are with the people of Baltimore during this difficult time.
On March 26, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland collapsed after being struck by a 948-foot cargo ship, as confirmed by the U.S. Coast Guard to NBC News.
Secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation, Paul Wiedefeld, described the incident as a “catastrophic collapse” during a press conference.
There were individuals on the bridge at the time of the collapse, with two being rescued from the water. One person was unharmed, while the other was taken to a local trauma center in critical condition, according to Chief of the Baltimore City Fire Department, James Wallace.
Authorities are still searching for six missing individuals, as confirmed by Wiedefeld in a subsequent press conference.
Wiedefeld mentioned that there was a construction crew on the bridge at the time, working on maintenance tasks, not structural issues. Governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the collapse but assured that the bridge was up to code and that there is no indication of a deliberate attack.
