Trans Latina Nava Mau Makes History as First Emmy Nominee Baby Reindeer
Baby Reindeer actress Nava Mau has achieved a historic Emmy nomination.
Mau has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, making her the first Latina trans nominee in this category. She shares the nomination with co-star Jessica Gunning, as well as Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country).
Baby Reindeer follows Richard Gadd’s character Donny Dunn and his encounter with a woman named Martha, played by Gunning, who turns out to be a dangerous stalker. Mau plays Teri, Donny’s transgender girlfriend, who gets caught up in the disturbing situation.
The Netflix series received 11 nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
Mau expressed her excitement about the nomination and how playing the character helped her process her emotions, particularly anger that she had suppressed as a trans Latina woman.
The 76th Emmy Awards will air live on ABC on Sept. 15 and will be streamed on Hulu the following day.
