Australian Executive Supports Breaker Raygun Despite Trolling
Rachael “Raygun” Gunn made waves on social media during her participation in the 2024 Olympics.
The breakdancer, also an Australian university lecturer holding a Ph.D. in cultural studies, faced a barrage of hateful comments from online trolls following her viral performance in the sport’s Olympic debut on Aug. 9. Despite losing all three of her B-Girl round-robin battles, Australia’s Olympic chief stood by her.
“I have immense respect for Rachael,” Chef de mission Anna Meares expressed at a press conference on Aug. 10, as reported by Reuters. “The negative comments from trolls and keyboard warriors on social media have been disheartening.”
Meares went on to praise Raygun’s contribution to the Olympic team, highlighting her enthusiasm and courage. She stood firm in her support for Raygun amidst the online attacks.
