Celebrities Who Almost Landed Roles in Barbie
Several years prior to the release of Greta Gerwig‘s version of Barbie, there was already a movie in development at Sony based on the popular doll, with the comedian initially attached to the project.
In 2017, she had to step down from the starring role due to conflicting schedules. However, earlier this year, she revealed the true reason for her departure.
“Initially, we attributed it to scheduling conflicts,” she explained on a June 2023 episode of Watch What Happens Live. “But in reality, it was more about creative differences. Nevertheless, the new team working on it seems to have a very feminist and cool approach, so I am looking forward to watching the movie.”
The actress’s comments mirror her previous statements about the artistic direction of the project.
“They did not share my vision for the project, which was the only way I wanted it to be done,” she disclosed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in March 2022.
Expressing her desire for Barbie to be depicted as an “inventor,” she revealed that the studio’s concept involved her character creating high heels made of Jell-O and even sent her a pair of Manolo Blahniks.
“The assumption that every woman desires that is quite presumptuous,” she remarked. “I should have clarified that they had the wrong person in mind.”
