Prince George Shows He is Serious About His Role as Future King
William was born in 1982 and only realized he was second in line to the throne when other kids at school asked him about it. His parents wanted him to focus on just being a kid. Diana would often tell him that the photographers were only interested in her and he shouldn’t pay them any mind.
Charles, born in 1948 while his grandfather King George VI was on the throne, also didn’t fully understand his role in the monarchy until he was older and noticed the public’s fascination with him.
Reflecting on his 21st birthday in 1969, Charles said, “I think it’s something that dawns on you with the most ghastly inexorable sense.” He gradually realized the duty and responsibility that came with his position.
After his separation from Diana in 1992, Charles strongly believed that his sons William and Harry, aged 10 and 8 respectively at the time, should be shielded from the public eye as much as possible. He wanted them to avoid official duties until they were older.
