The Ultimate Guide to the Masked Shot Put Champion
Don’t underestimate it: Raven Saunders doesn’t shy away from being true to themselves.
Despite appearing at the 2024 Olympics shot put qualification in a full face covering and sunglasses, the U.S. athlete proudly displayed their authentic self.
“I’m fully embracing who I am,” Saunders declared during the event on Aug. 8, as reported by The Guardian. “I want to remind everyone of that fact.”
The 28-year-old, who made it to the final with an 18.62-meter throw, has sported masks at various competitions, including the Hulk mask worn during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held in 2021 amidst the pandemic.
During the Paris event, Saunders paid tribute to the Marvel character by spelling out “Hulk” on their red, white, and blue-painted fingernails, and showcasing green and purple hair. Going by the name Raven Hulk Saunders on Instagram, the Olympian has explained the significance of the Hulk persona.
“The Hulk is my way of addressing mental health,” Saunders shared with Today during the Tokyo Games. “I often talk about mental health awareness, especially in light of my personal struggles. The mask allows me to tap into my inner Hulk and Raven—have some fun, [do] a little dance, and celebrate. The Hulk represents my beast mode.”
