Friendship Explored: Albert Brooks and Rob Reiner Discuss HBO Doc ‘Defending My Life’

Albert Brooks: Defending My Life pays tribute to a pioneer whose irreverent humor has spanned late night TV, comedy albums, features, animated voice work, and a novel. However, the highlight of the film is the engaging conversation between Brooks and his longtime friend Rob Reiner, who directed the HBO documentary. These Hollywood legends, who met in their teenage years at Beverly Hills High School, share anecdotes and jokes about Brooks’ influential career over lunch. This gives the film a refreshing and lively perspective on what could have been just another celebrity profile.

In the film, Brooks reminisces about his experiences on Saturday Night Live and Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, his relationships with Carrie Fisher and Stanley Kubrick, his seven films as a writer and director, and becoming a new father in his 50s. Brooks, known for satirizing showbiz norms and breaking down traditional jokes, has influenced many contemporary humorists. Defending My Life celebrates his contributions to pop culture. In an interview with THR, they discuss the making of the film, its Emmy eligibility, and the changes in the industry.

Rob, what did it take to persuade Albert to make this documentary?

ROB REINER An enormous amount of money. Just kidding. I’ve always wanted to do this. I pitched the idea to Albert years ago, suggesting a film similar to My Dinner With Andre, titled My Lunch With Albert. Eventually, we both agreed that it could be a comprehensive look at his career and genius. I believe Albert deserves recognition, especially from younger audiences who may not be familiar with his work.
