Adele and Taylor Swift: Navigating the Entertainment Industry During Covid with Pandemic Insurance
By Lambert Strether of Corrente
Throughout recent years, there have been occasional tweets claiming that certain entertainers were unable to cancel performances due to Covid because insurance wouldn’t cover the loss. This week, information about Adele, Covid, and “event cancellation” insurance came across my feed, prompting me to explore the topic further. I also sought information on Taylor Swift for a comparison to Adele.
I must provide several disclaimers. I have no knowledge of Adele or Taylor Swift, and I don’t listen to their music. Adele’s statistics from Billboard can be found here, and Swift’s can be found here.
As show business figures, neither artist is insignificant, although Swift is considered the brighter star. I don’t have much knowledge about insurance, so I welcome corrections and insights from readers on any errors in my presentation.
First, I will examine how Adele and Swift have handled Covid, followed by a brief description of the insurance situation during the pandemic. Unfortunately, we can’t reason from insurance policies to the behavior of the artists, so speculation is the best we can do.
