Why Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha Failed According to Ram Gopal Varma: Could it be the Subject Matter?
Aamir Khan is known as one of the actors who has delivered numerous hit films in his long movie career. However, there have been some films that didn’t perform well at the box office and failed to impress the audience. One such film is the 2022 comedy-drama, Laal Singh Chaddha. Despite being one of Khan’s most ambitious projects, it didn’t succeed in India but reportedly did well overseas.
The movie is a remake of the American comedy-drama film, Forrest Gump, directed by Robert Zemeckis and released in 1994. Renowned Indian filmmaker, Ram Gopal Varma, recently talked about Aamir’s fascination with Forrest Gump in an interview with Galatta Plus. He also shared his thoughts on why the movie didn’t become a major success.
Varma mentioned that Aamir Khan has a deep admiration for Forrest Gump, making Laal Singh Chaddha a dream project for him that he had envisioned over the years. Varma expressed uncertainty about whether the movie turned out well or not. He pointed out that as the film progressed, it catered to an audience unfamiliar with Forrest Gump.
During the interview, Varma emphasized that Laal Singh Chaddha was essentially an Aamir Khan film and didn’t require a background story. He suggested that the subject matter borrowed from Forrest Gump might not have resonated with the audience. However, he clarified that these were all speculations.
The director also discussed the 2018 film, Thugs of Hindostan, directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. He remarked that the perception of a bad film varies from person to person and that predicting audience preferences is challenging.
Laal Singh Chaddha also features Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya, and Mona Singh. Aamir Khan is currently shooting for his upcoming movie, Sitaare Zameen Par, with Genelia Deshmukh. The sports drama, inspired by the Spanish film Champions, is set to release theatrically on December 27, 2024.
