Emilia Pérez Co-Star Karla Sofia Gascón Emphasizes Confidence in Oscar Nomination Buzz
Karla Sofia Gascón’s performance in Jacques Audiard’s unique Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez at Cannes 2024 has been generating excitement. She received the festival’s esteemed Best Actress award alongside co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, and is now being considered for an Oscar nomination next year.
If this prediction comes true, Gascón will make history as the first trans actress to receive an Oscar nomination. At the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain on September 22, she shared her thoughts on the possibility, stating, “You can do whatever you want to win [the Oscar], if you’re not gonna win it, you’re not gonna win it.”
She believes in destiny and feels that if an Oscar win or nomination is meant for her, it will happen. For now, she remains focused on her current work and aims to continue improving.
She hopes to be recognized for her performance, not because it would make a statement for the Academy, but solely based on her acting. Gascón emphasized the importance of being acknowledged for her role and not for her background, stating, “I’ve done a role very few people could have done.”
While she values her heritage, Gascón’s primary focus is on her acting. She mentioned her appreciation for France and Audiard for submitting a Spanish film for Oscar consideration. “The French, they love their own language. They’re very much their own people. For a French director and crew to create a film like this is incredible,” she noted.
Emilia Pérez will debut on Netflix on November 13.
