Florence Pugh Expresses Hurt Over Online Bullying, Describes Pain of Reading Hurtful Comments on Her Appearance
Florence Pugh refers to the internet as a “mean place,” and rightfully so. The actress from We Live in Time opened up to British Vogue in a recent interview about the hate comments she has received, particularly about her weight and confidence, which have been very hurtful. “It’s so difficult,” said the Dune actress. “It’s really painful to read people being nasty about my confidence or weight. It never feels good.”
Pugh stands for authenticity and refuses to promote things that are not true to herself. She is opinionated and speaks candidly about her body rather than sugarcoating or hiding it. “I’m not trying to hide the cellulite on my thigh or the squidge in between my arm and my boob,” she shared in an interview with Elle UK last year.
The actress from Midsommar is known for her upfront, confident, and blunt nature, which stems from a place of insecurity. Pugh disclosed that she makes a conscious effort to appear confident, which may come across as blunt at times. “I think it’s just, like, I don’t want to be anyone else,” she added.
The Academy Award-nominated actress also struggled with accepting magazine shoots and the modeling aspect of her industry, a skill she has honed over time. “I’m not a model. It’s portraying a completely different version of myself that I don’t necessarily believe in,” she explained. Surprisingly, she finds it challenging to accept that she deserves to be on the cover of magazines that promote beauty.
Nevertheless, she has learned from her experiences and knows “what to show and who to show” by now. “I know who I want to be and I know what I look like. There’s no insecurities about what I am anymore,” she added.
The Oppenheimer actress is set to star in John Crowley’s romantic film We Live in Time, scheduled for release in theaters on October 11. In the movie, she plays Almut, an aspiring chef dealing with a terminal illness, alongside Andrew Garfield’s Tobias. The drama, spanning decades, follows the couple as they navigate love, life, and parenthood.
