Masaba Gupta acknowledges that her father, Vivian Richards, encountered obstacles in his cricket career due to his skin color: ‘Even now, he is moved to tears’
Masaba Gupta is the daughter of actress Neena Gupta and former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards. The expectant celebrity designer shares a strong bond with her parents. While she often talks about her mother Neena, Masaba recently opened up about her father Viv Richards, revealing that he faced racism during his cricket career. She admitted that her father faced challenges due to his skin color, to the point where he would become emotional.
In a recent interview with Faye D’Souza, Masaba Gupta shared that her retired father, Viv Richards, experienced racism during his active cricket years. Masaba now feels a strong connection with her father’s feelings about racial discrimination which he endured for years.
“To this day, if you ask him, he will show tears or anger… He played cricket professionally during a time where skin color could hinder your progress in the world,” Masaba said.
The designer emphasized that racism still exists and people should fight against discrimination based on skin color.
In 2023, Masaba Gupta celebrated Diwali with her father Vivian Richards. She shared photos from the celebration, including one of her and Viv together. In the photo, they both smiled, with Masaba in a red outfit and Viv in a white shirt and pants.
“A special Diwali. Papa and lots of love from those who bring light into my life every day. Have a great year, everyone #happydiwali,” she captioned the post.
Vivian Richards’ legacy in cricket will always be remembered. He is considered one of the greatest batsmen of all time, representing the West Indies from 1974 to 1991.
On the professional front, Masaba Gupta is known for her series “Masaba Masaba” in 2020, where she starred alongside her mother Neena Gupta. The second season premiered in 2022.
