Hansal Mehta confesses financial challenges in re-releasing films; compares Tumbbad hoardings to The Buckingham Murders: ‘I persist…’
Hansal Mehta, a National Award-winning director, began his filmmaking journey with a popular cooking show and has since created iconic movies. Despite his success, Mehta is not considering re-releasing his films due to a lack of funds. In a recent interview, the Shahid maker expressed his desire to bring back his movies to cinema halls but acknowledged the high expenses involved in re-releasing them.
The acclaimed filmmaker, known for projects like Dus Kahaniyaan, CityLights, Aligarh, Omerta, Scam 1992, Scoop, and more, shared his thoughts on the re-release trend. Mehta mentioned that re-releasing films can be costly and highlighted the substantial budgets allocated to recent re-releases in Bollywood.
In a recent development, Mehta’s crime-thriller film The Buckingham Murders, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, hit cinemas, while Tumbbad was also re-released by popular demand. Mehta praised actor-producer Sohum Shah for his dedication to marketing Tumbbad and acknowledged the financial constraints he faces in re-releasing his own films.
Despite the financial challenges, Mehta remains committed to his craft as a filmmaker. He emphasized that he relies on the earnings from his work to support his family and cannot afford extravagant re-releases. Mehta also discussed the box office performance of The Buckingham Murders and assured that his producers had anticipated the risks involved in the film’s production.
Fortunately, The Buckingham Murders had already recouped most of its budget when it premiered at the 67th BFI London Film Festival in October 2023. The theatrical re-release was an added bonus for the film’s success.
