Paramount Acquires ‘September 5,’ Causing a Stir in the Oscar Race (Exclusive)
In a groundbreaking move, Paramount Pictures has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the highly anticipated film September 5, a strong contender in this year’s Oscar race, as reported exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter.
The studio has also secured the worldwide distribution rights for September 5 (excluding Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, which will be handled by Constantin Film). The film is set to release in the U.S. on Nov. 27, during the Thanksgiving long weekend, with plans to expand its theatrical release into December, supported by a strong awards campaign.
Starring Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, and Leonie Benesch, Tim Fehlbaum‘s third feature explores the 1972 Munich Olympics terrorist attack and ABC Sports’ coverage of the event. The film delves into the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by journalists during the live coverage of the attack, led by characters such as Roone Arledge (Sarsgaard) and Geoff Mason (Magaro).
Paramount’s Republic Pictures initially acquired the global sales rights for September 5 and sparked intense interest from distributors following its exceptional reception at the Venice and Telluride film festivals. The Hollywood Reporter dubbed it “an enlightening, altogether gripping experience” with a “terrific cast.” The film now joins Paramount’s impressive awards slate alongside titles such as Gladiator 2 and Better Man.
Ultimately, it was decided that September 5 should remain within the Paramount family, given its potential for awards recognition and critical acclaim. The film offers not just a historical lens but also resonates with contemporary audiences in its portrayal of journalistic challenges.
