Etty Lau Stands Up for Husband Perry Farrell Amidst Intense Confrontation: ‘His Voice Was Being Overpowered’
Perry Farrell, the singer of Jane’s Addiction, was involved in an intense altercation with guitarist Dave Navarro on stage during a recent concert. The incident has stirred up discussion online, especially after Perry’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, shared her thoughts on social media. Fans were shocked and concerned by the altercation that took place on September 13.
A video captured Perry Farrell appearing to punch guitarist Dave Navarro during a Jane’s Addiction concert on September 13. The video shows Perry singing into a microphone and bumping into Navarro.
Navarro responded by placing a hand between himself and Perry. The situation escalated when Perry appeared to throw a punch at his bandmate.
Afterwards, several people rushed onto the stage to restrain Perry, and as the lights dimmed, a man was seen punching Perry in the stomach. The video of the incident quickly went viral, leading to speculation about the band’s dynamics.
Etty Lau Farrell addressed the altercation in an Instagram post, providing insights and a first-hand account of what happened. She explained that tensions among the band members had been rising.
“There has been a lot of tension and animosity between the members,” Etty wrote. “The dynamite was lit that night.” According to Etty, Perry’s frustration with the band’s extremely loud volume triggered the incident. Perry felt like his voice was being drowned out, leading to his frustration.
Etty mentioned that her husband was dealing with tinnitus and a sore throat, making it challenging for him to perform comfortably. “Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night,” she wrote.
Etty described how the situation escalated when audience members in the front row complained to Perry about the sound levels. Fans started shouting at Perry because the band was playing too loudly, making it hard for them to hear him. That feedback pushed Perry over the edge.
She continued to explain that the band started the song Ocean before Perry was prepared and did the countdown. Perry couldn’t hear anything over the boom and vibration of the instruments due to the high stage volume at the time. “By the end of the song, he wasn’t singing—he was screaming just to be heard,” she wrote.
Etty mentioned that Navarro tried to calm the situation by keeping Perry at arm’s length, but things turned physical when bassist Eric Avery got involved.
She reported that Eric put Perry in a headlock and punched him in the stomach three times. She added that a crew member eventually separated Avery and he went to the front of the stage to apologize to the audience for the premature end of the show.
Farrell, Navarro, Avery, and Jane’s Addiction representatives have not released any official statements regarding the altercation. The incident was significant for the band, which recently reunited after 14 years.
