Jordan Chiles Was “Heart Is Broken” After Olympic Medal Was Stripped

Jordan Chiles devastated after Olympic medal strip.

Her coaches submitted an inquiry on her behalf, challenging the score of her routine. According to NBC Olympics, an inquiry is a verbal challenge of a routine’s score that must be followed by a written submission before the end of the rotation. The challenge can only be made after the gymnast’s final score is announced, and before the next gymnast begins their routine.

If the gymnast is the last to perform, there is a one-minute time limit from when the score is displayed, as per the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

The inquiry was regarding a split leap in Chiles’s routine known as the tour jeté full.

“During the team qualification and final, she didn’t receive credit for this skill,” explained Olympian and NBC gymnastics analyst John Roethlisberger during the broadcast. “After reviewing the routine, the judges accepted the inquiry and awarded Chiles 0.1 for the leap, increasing her score to 13.766, earning her the bronze medal.”

Chiles was overcome with joy when she learned of the results, securing her spot on the podium and displacing Barbosu, who had initially celebrated her own performance with Romania’s flag.
