Kathy Bates Announces Plans to Retire From Acting After Over 50 Years

After a career spanning over five decades, Kathy Bates reveals intention to retire from acting

After spending five years in Hollywood, Kathy Bates is looking forward to some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

The Academy Award winner disclosed that she is considering retiring from acting following her upcoming CBS revival series Matlock, stating in an interview with The New York Times published on September 8, “This is my last dance.”

Although this isn’t the first time the 76-year-old has contemplated retirement, she recalled a negative experience on a movie set that made her want to quit and brought her to tears.

“It consumes my life,” confessed Bates. “At times, I feel envious of my own talent, because I can’t suppress it, and all I desire is a normal life.”

Yet, upon reading the script for Matlock—a modern version of the beloved Andy Griffith legal drama from the late 80s to mid-90s—she connected instantly with the character and had a change of heart.

“Everything I’ve ever hoped for, labored for, fought tooth and nail for, I am now called upon to utilize all of it,” remarked Bates. “It’s utterly draining.”
