Actress Natalie Dormer Shares Frustration Over Game of Thrones Character’s Death: ‘She Deserved More’
Natalie Dormer, known for her role as Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones, has shared her disappointment with how her character met her end on the show. In an interview on Collider Ladies Night, Dormer expressed her frustration with Margaery’s death scene.
“I was frustrated by the way she exited,” Dormer explained. “I had hoped for more, but it was fitting for her character in that moment with Jonathan Pryce, so in a way, it felt right.”
Margaery Tyrell meets her demise in Season 6, in the episode “The Winds of Winter.” Cersei Lannister uses wildfire to destroy the Great Sept of Baelor, resulting in the deaths of Margaery and many others trapped inside. Margaery tries to warn those present of the impending danger but is unable to save them.
Dormer mentioned that while Margaery’s death was brutal, her actions brought a sense of justice to her character. She felt vindicated in the end, and that was all that needed to be conveyed. She could finally let Margaery go.
Many fans were left disappointed by Margaery’s death, feeling that her character, who had faced numerous hardships, deserved a better ending. Dormer had previously shared her own ideas on how Margaery could have met her end.
“If Margaery had to die, how would I want her to go? Probably by dragon,” Dormer told GamesRadar+. “It would be most fitting, but that would mean Dany would have to get over men, so who knows?” Despite Dormer’s dragon fantasy, Margaery’s fiery demise closely mirrored the dramatic exit she had envisioned.
Margaery Tyrell, portrayed by Natalie Dormer, was the daughter of Lord Mace Tyrell and Lady Alerie Tyrell and the granddaughter of Lady Olenna Tyrell. After marrying King Joffrey Baratheon and later his brother, King Tommen Baratheon, she became Queen Consort. Margaery’s downfall started with false charges of perjury and her involvement with the Sparrow movement, ultimately leading to her tragic end.
In the Great Sept of Baelor during Cersei and Loras’ trial, Margaery stands with her father. Upon realizing Cersei and Tommen’s absence, she tries to evacuate the sept with Loras, but their efforts are futile as the wildfire explosion claims their lives along with others present.
Margaery’s death also contributes to Tommen’s subsequent suicide and Cersei’s rise to power. With Margaery gone, the connection between House Tyrell and House Lannister is severed, leading her grandmother Olenna Tyrell to ally with Daenerys Targaryen.
