Alan Cumming Breaks RuPaul’s Record Streak by Winning Reality Host Emmy
Alan Cumming has dethroned RuPaul as the best reality or competition program host, winning the Emmy for the category at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday. This win marked Cumming’s first Emmy Award as host of Peacock’s The Traitors.
Although Cumming was not present at the ceremony, in a previous Q&A for THR Frontrunners, he mentioned that he approaches hosting the reality competition like any other role.
He described hosting The Traitors as a huge acting job, treating it as a character distinct from himself. Cumming also shared that the show’s success lies in its ability to capture human behavior and the dynamics of deception.
According to Cumming, the show’s appeal comes from the audience’s ability to witness people in uncommon situations, allowing them to see through lies and deception.
Other nominees in the category for best host for a reality or competition program included Kristen Kish of Top Chef, Jeff Probst of Survivor, and the hosts of Shark Tank. RuPaul still holds the record for the most-awarded reality host in Emmys history, with eight consecutive wins from 2016-2023.
