Prince Harry’s emotional tribute at his uncle’s funeral service has left people ‘astounded’
Prince Harry flew across the Atlantic to pay his respects to his late uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, despite earlier reports suggesting he would not attend. A source told PEOPLE that the memorial service was extremely emotional, and the Duke of Sussex’s moving tribute left guests astounded.
According to an attendee, “Most people were astounded that Harry came. He was in remarkably good spirits and seemed very pleased to see everyone. He was also happy that he made the trip.”
The funeral took place on August 29, just two days before the anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, giving added significance to Harry’s visit. Although Prince William was also present, rumors of reconciliation were not evident as the two reportedly did not interact.
During the service at St. Mary’s Church in Snettisham, Norfolk, the brothers sat with separate groups of their maternal cousins. It was reported that Harry did not visit his father, King Charles, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland during his cancer treatment.
While anticipated reunions did not materialize, the Duke of Sussex did spend time with his maternal aunts, uncles, and cousins, including Fellowes’s widow, Lady Jane, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, and Lady Sarah McCorquodale.
Both Prince William and Harry have close ties to their mother’s side of the family. Fellowes’s daughter Laura is the godmother to Princess Charlotte, daughter of The Prince of Wales. Some members of the Spencers joined Harry at the service in May to honor his Invictus Games at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
A royal source mentioned that Harry’s attendance was not unexpected, stating, “I think it was lovely – and right – that he came and paid his respects.” Another source suggested that given the health challenges faced by the royal family, Harry now desires to be closer to his family. “I suspect he wants to spend time with people. He is very close to his mother’s side of the family,” revealed an insider.
