21-Year-Old Gymnast Kara Welsh Dies After Being Shot
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community is in mourning.
Kara Welsh, a 21-year-old management student and a member of the school’s Warhawk gymnastics team, was tragically shot and killed in an off-campus apartment by an acquaintance, according to Whitewater Police. The suspect has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder.
Authorities stated in a press release that on August 30, just before midnight, police responded to a call about a shooting victim and discovered Welsh with fatal gunshot wounds.
“Also present in the apartment was a 23-year-old male who was acquainted with the victim,” the statement said. “An investigation revealed that an altercation between the two individuals led to the shooting.”
The suspect, who remains unnamed, has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety with a dangerous weapon, and armed disorderly conduct, as per another official statement from the police. The investigation is ongoing.
