Will Ferrell filmed a road trip documentary with his long-time friend, Harper Steele. The two actors set out on a cross-country drive, capturing their adventures on camera. Ferrell and Steele have been friends since they met on the set of Saturday Night Live back in 1995.
During a screening of the movie, the pair discussed their documentary, directed by Josh Greenbaum, with the audience. Steele emphasized that the film is not about representing trans women, but rather focuses on the story of their friendship and the importance of supporting each other during tough times.
Steele remarked, “I must say, as a trans woman, I don’t believe this film accurately portrays a trans woman navigating through the world, whether it be in red states America or anywhere else. They don’t have a camera, nor do they have Will Ferrell.”
She went on to explain, “We were very conscious of this fact. I believe the film truly embodies how friends should rally together during times of change or crisis, not just about trans issues. The film captures this sentiment beautifully.”
As the discussion continued, Ferrell, famous for his role in Step Brothers, recalled how Steele would playfully tease him about his stature in Hollywood during their trip, moving between being a “B-level” actor to “A-level” and occasionally “C-level.” He shared, “Once those labels disappeared, people started asking, ‘What are your intentions?’ and that sparked genuine conversations.”
The friends also shared their reactions to watching the film. Steele confessed her enjoyment of the movie but acknowledged that the ending was emotionally challenging. Ferrell admitted that while he didn’t want to diminish his friend’s emotions, he found the film moving and tear-inducing every time he watched it.
According to the documentary’s synopsis, “When Will Ferrell’s close friend Harper comes out as a trans woman, they embark on a road trip to reconnect and reintroduce Harper to the country as her authentic self.”
Will and Harper is set to premiere on Netflix on September 27.
