Charli XCX Unexpectedly Goes Viral with ‘Kamala Is Brat’ Post: “I’m No Bob Dylan, I’m Not Political”
Charli XCX recently spoke out about the backlash she faced on social media after posting “Kamala is Brat” in a cover story interview with New York Magazine. In the interview, released on August 26, the pop star explained that her intention behind the viral message was not political but rather a playful reference.
Charli XCX, known for her chart-topping hits, caused a stir with her tweet “kamala [sic] IS brat,” referencing her latest album, brat. The tweet unexpectedly gained traction, leading Vice President Kamala Harris’ official campaign account to change its banner to match the album’s neon green theme.
During the interview, Charli XCX clarified that her post was meant to be light-hearted and not political. She acknowledged knowing what she was doing but did not anticipate the post going viral.
“Did I think me talking about being a messy bitch and, like, partying and needing a Bic lighter and a pack of Marlboro Lights would end up on CNN? No,” she said.
Although she stated she is not a political artist and does not want to be likened to iconic figures like Bob Dylan, Charli XCX discussed her broader political beliefs. She emphasized the importance of being on the right side of democracy and women’s rights, expressing her commitment to promoting these values and preventing democracy from failing.
Charli also emphasized that while her life and experiences influence her art, politics do not play a significant role in her creative process. She explained that everything she does in her life feeds back into her artwork, from what she says and wears to what she thinks and enjoys, but politics do not serve as an inspiration for her art.
