What Theories Explain Meryl Streep’s Absence as Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
Meryl Streep is one of the finest actresses in the industry, known for taking on challenging and iconic roles. Her portrayal of Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia is considered one of her greatest performances.
Despite fans hoping for Streep to reprise her role in the sequel, she declined the offer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Other original cast members also did not return for the 2018 release. Donna Sheridan is the mother of Amanda Seyfried’s character, Sophie, who owns the Villa Donna Hotel with a complicated past.
The director of Mamma Mia 2, Ol Parker, explained the reasons for the cast members not returning. He mentioned that not every story needs a sequel and finding a storyline that made dramatic sense was a challenge.
Rumors suggest that Mamma Mia 3 might be in the works, with many original cast members possibly returning. However, filming has not yet begun for the third installment.

In Mamma Mia 2, the absence of Streep led to the writer, Richard Curtis, crafting the story as a prequel. By having Donna die between the two films, the movie could delve into her past through flashbacks. The creators felt this was the most meaningful way to continue Donna’s story.
Although Streep’s character was not physically present in the second film, she appeared as a ghost, sang a few songs, and made an exit.
Details about a potential third film have not been released by the makers or studios yet.
