Chainsaw Man Chapter 173, titled Hard Of Hearing, starts with the world being transformed after Pochita consumed the Ear Devil. A man is seen frustratedly using his phone, elephants in the savannah are shown without ears, and a cell phone is smashed in a crowd.
Cats without ears and earless individuals in Tokyo streets are also depicted. A Public Safety agent tries to communicate with prisoners wearing earmuffs, asking them about the word ‘Ear.’ The prisoners, unable to understand, signal to the agent affirming the Erase of the Ear Devil.
After this, Team C is instructed to begin their operation. Chainsaw Man Chapter 173 transitions to a bathroom where three Public Safety agents cut off parts of their left index fingers, using them to write ‘HIT’ on mirrors while saying ‘cervical spine,’ ‘neck,’ and ‘vertebrae’ in order.
These mirrors then appear in front of a Devil in Hell, sitting on a grotesque throne adorned with human body parts. The Devil’s body is composed of fleshy vines, with a featureless face holding a mouth flanked by two halves of another face with long hair.
The Devil sighs and raises its fist in Chainsaw Man Chapter 173, manifesting out of a mirror above Pochita, who had just finished consuming the Ear Devil. Pochita manages to avoid being crushed by severing two of the Devil’s fingers, causing the Devil to lose those fingers in Hell as well.
Hirofumi Yoshida arrives and uses the Octopus Devil to restrain Pochita with an octopus arm, compelling him to regurgitate the half-eaten head of the Ear Devil. Chainsaw Man Chapter 173 concludes with an elephant regaining its ears, signaling the return of what Pochita had consumed.
