4. Even though he only appears in the film for around 10 minutes, Donnie Wahlberg went through a significant transformation to portray Malcolm’s tormented former patient Vincent, shedding 43 pounds in just five weeks.
“I remember Night saying, ‘This scene really has to kickstart the movie,'” the New Kids on the Block singer recounted to THR. “I tried not to dwell on that pressure and responsibility and just focus on honoring the script and getting into the mindset necessary to play this role. I believed that if I hadn’t endured some intense and dramatic situations before facing Bruce Willis and Olivia Williams in that room, how could I expose my vulnerability, let alone my soul? That’s the perspective I took.”
He went on to explain that he took a rather methodical approach to prepare for the role, relocating to New York and staying at a friend’s apartment, “but with no money, no credit cards. I would fast for days at a time, eat only vegetables, chew gum all day, and then wander the streets. When I reached Philadelphia, I even spent a night sleeping in the park, going through this intense process.”
Unfortunately, he couldn’t go all out for his pivotal scene as he had hoped, having to settle for appearing in his “tighty-whities” to keep the film’s PG-13 rating.
