On Kishore Kumar’s 95th Birthday: The Moment a Composer Told the Legendary Singer He Didn’t Know ABCs of Music
India celebrates the birth anniversary of the legendary singer Kishore Kumar on August 4, 2024. Known for his melodious voice, enthusiasm, and versatility, Kumar was more than just a singer. His unique vocal tone and ability to express emotions in every note made him a valuable asset to the Indian music industry. His work ranged from soulful ballads to lively dance tracks, showcasing his immense talent.
In Raju Bharatan’s book A Journey Down Melody Lane from 2010, it is revealed that when Kishore Kumar was cast as the lead actor in a film, he assumed he would also be the lead vocalist for his character. However, the film’s music composer, Salil Chowdhury, had other plans and wanted to sign singer Hemant Kumar instead.
Despite this, Kishore Kumar visited Chowdhury to showcase his talent by singing his favorite songs. Initially unimpressed, Chowdhury eventually relented after others intervened and persuaded him to give Kumar a chance. Chowdhury later admitted his mistake and praised Kishore Kumar’s singing ability.
