Did House Of The Dragon Season 2, Episode 7 Feature George R.R. Martin’s Face? Learn More!
Yes! George RR Martin, the creator of House of the Dragon, made a surprise cameo in the penultimate episode of season 2. In the Red Sowing episode, where the Dragonseeds claim their dragons, Martin’s face was incorporated in a subtle way!
A behind-the-scenes video from Game of Thrones revealed that the face carved in Harrenhal’s weirwood tree was modeled after Martin’s face. Production designer Jim Clay mentioned that this was done as a tribute to Martin, as requested by showrunner Ryan Condal.
“Ryan [Condal] wanted to do [it] as a bit of a tribute, and the idea was that it gradually started to disappear back into the bark of the tree,” he said. “The brief was to make it feel enough like him, but you were never really sure.”
This was a fitting tribute to Martin, the creator of the source material for House of the Dragon. Martin is also an executive producer of the prequel series.
Weirwood trees have been a significant element in the world of Westeros and have been featured in various locations in Game of Thrones and House Of The Dragon, including Harrenhaal, Winterfell, King’s Landing, and Beyond the Wall.
The trees, connected to the old gods of Westeros, are believed to be carved by children of the forest. Only a few trees remain after the Andals cut them down to promote the Faith of the Seven or the New Gods.
In the behind-the-scenes video, Condal talks about how Harrenhaal’s weirwood tree is deteriorating compared to the Red Keep’s. The castle was built using weirwood trees, leading to strange hallucinations experienced by Daemon.
With the significant role of weirwood trees in Westeros’ history, having a George R.R. Martin-inspired face inside the tree is a perfect fit! House of The Dragon is currently available for streaming on Jio Cinema.
