Deadpool and Wolverine Dominate Box Office in India with 25 crore Day One, Marking Sixth Biggest Hollywood Opening

This places it as the sixth-highest opening day for a Hollywood film in India, following behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and surpassing Thor: Love and Thunder.
With an age-restrictive rating, Deadpool and Wolverine is the top opener for a Hollywood film, surpassing Oppenheimer’s Rs. 17.60 crore. However, these ratings hold less significance in India compared to Western markets. It also marks the highest opening for an X-Men movie, beating Deadpool 2’s Rs. 12.70 crore in 2018.
Beyond the initial numbers, the film’s reception among audiences is crucial. While recent Marvel films have strong opening numbers, their overall success has been hampered by mixed reviews, including the mentioned MCU movies. In contrast, Deadpool and Wolverine has garnered positive word-of-mouth, with early ratings of 9 on BookMyShow, compared to 7.9 for Thor 4 and 8.1 for Doctor Strange 2.
Unlike recent Hollywood releases that leaned heavily towards South India, Deadpool and Wolverine had a more balanced audience, with a strong reception in North India. The film performed 30% better in North India on its first day compared to Thor 4, although it saw a 20% decline in the South. Competition from the Tamil film Rayaan played a role in this, impacting the film’s overall collections. However, this more even distribution bodes well for its performance over the weekend.
