Slash admits that his ultimate goal is to perform on stage
The lead guitarist of the iconic rock band Guns n’ Roses has discussed his upcoming S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival tour in support of his album, as well as what has motivated him since the band’s prime. During a conversation with PEOPLE magazine at Gibson Garage in Nashville, Slash, also known as Saul Hudson, shared insights into the purpose of the tour, his passion for guitar, and more.
Slash’s primary motivation is his love for performing live
“The main drive for me,” the guitarist reveals, “is to go out and perform.” While he enjoys composing music and entering the studio for recording sessions, Slash sees these as means to an end. The real reward comes from live performances. “I love playing. I enjoy every aspect of it,” he explains, emphasizing his excitement to play in front of an audience.
Live performances offer room for improvisation and on-stage spontaneity, which Slash finds invigorating. The freedom to experiment within the structure of a song is like playing in a sandbox for him. “That’s what excites me and keeps me going,” he concludes.
Slash on S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival tour
The upcoming North American tour by the rockstar is in support of his latest album, “Orgy of The Damned,” released in May. Starting in Bonner, Montana, the festival tour will visit cities like Los Angeles, Denver, Cincinnati, Toronto, and more over a little over a month. According to Slash’s website, S.E.R.P.E.N.T. stands for Solidarity, Engagement, Restore, Peace, Equality N’ Tolerance, with the tour aiming to support communities facing injustices such as racism, war, and poverty.
“Orgy of The Damned,” the album that topped the Billboard blues chart, features iconic songs in the genre, with vocals from artists like Chris Stapleton and Demi Lovato. The concept had been brewing in Slash’s mind since the ’90s, and it was finalized during a band tour last year. “The album’s positive reception is surreal to me,” the star comments on its success, expressing readiness to shine in this new touring environment.
