The Beckhams ultimately took legal action against News of the World in response to a September 2004 story titled “Posh and Becks on the Rocks.” The tabloid had published claims that a beautician named Danielle Heath had an affair with the athlete.
“We are tired of people trying to profit at our family’s expense,” the Beckhams said in a statement. “These allegations are false, especially during a time when we are expecting our third son. Our legal team is handling the situation.”
In 2005, the couple expanded their lawsuit to include another News of the World story alleging that their marriage was a sham, based on information from a former nanny named Abbie Gibson. They also sued the nanny for breach of confidence.
“When you invite someone into your home to care for your children, you must trust them,” David Beckham stated in April 2005. “I cannot say much due to the legal process, but I can say that my focus is on football because my wife and I are happy. Despite being seen differently by others, we are just like everyone else. We may have disagreements, but ultimately, I love my wife.”
