During May 2023, the former One Direction member celebrated reaching 100 days of sobriety.
“I feel fantastic,” he expressed. “I feel really great, and the support from the fans has been amazing.”
His struggle with addiction began during the peak of One Direction’s popularity. “The issue we faced in the band—and I hold no one at fault for this…But it felt like, when we were in the band, the best way to protect us, due to our immense popularity, was to confine us to a room. And what’s typically found in a room? A mini bar,” Liam explained. “So at one point, I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to have my own party,’ and that behavior continued for many years.”
He has always been open about his journey to sobriety. “It wasn’t until I saw myself afterward that I realized, ‘Okay, I need to make a change,'” he reflected in June 2021 when he had been sober for over a month. “I saw some pictures of me on a boat looking bloated, and I called it the pills-and-booze face… My face was so much puffier than it is now. I wasn’t happy with myself, so I decided to make a change.”
