What insights did director Kelsey Mann reveal from consulting teenage advisors?
During discussions about the making of Inside Out 2, director Kelsey Mann shared that they had to directly interact with teenagers to study their behavior. In the first film of the franchise, Riley’s character was still a child, with the core emotions like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear already established in her mind.
However, in the sequel, Riley has grown into a teenager entering puberty. To accurately depict the emotions of a 13-year-old, the filmmaker consulted adolescent focus groups.
Mann also mentioned, “Essentially, we had a Zoom room full of 13-year-old female advisors watching every screening of the film to provide feedback.” He emphasized that creating a Pixar film involves ongoing discussions with diverse groups of people, including 13-year-old girls.
