Angela Bassett Expresses Her “Deep Disappointment” Following Oscars Defeat
Angela Bassett recalls the incident.
By “incident”, we mean her now-famous reaction to losing the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress to Jamie Lee Curtis at the 2023 Academy Awards.
“I was completely surprised,” the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star revealed on the March 5 episode of Oprah Winfrey‘s OWN Spotlight. “It was—naturally—a big letdown, and disappointment is part of being human.”
Despite this, Bassett believes she handled the loss “very well,” keeping her composure as the Everything Everywhere All at Once actress went up on stage to receive the award.
“That was my goal, to handle it gracefully,” the 65-year-old added. “Yes, I felt disappointed and I handled it like any other person would.”
Bassett also stressed the importance of showing grace in such situations, not only for herself but also for her 18-year-old twins Bronwyn and Slater—whom she shares with actor Courtney B. Vance.
“There will be moments of disappointment that you’ll face, but how you handle yourself in those moments is crucial,” she shared with Winfrey. “We will keep a smile on our faces, be gracious, be kind, and celebrate regardless.”
