David Carr makes an awkward joke suggesting that Taylor Swift should date the married George Kittle
David Carr’s attempt at a Taylor Swift joke fell flat with some fans in a painfully awkward moment ahead of Opening Night at Super Bowl 2024 in Las Vegas.
During Monday’s installment of “Total Access,” the former Giants quarterback-turned-NFL Network analyst joked that Swift, who’s dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, should be with San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle.
“George Kittle. I’m glad Taylor Swift is out of the country because if she sees George Kittle, she may rethink the tight end she chose,” Carr said.
That didn’t go over well with host Kimmi Chex.
“What! No!” she yelled. “He’s married to his college sweetheart [Claire Kittle].
“Come on, OK.”
NFL Network anchor Mike Yam and analyst Chase Daniel, a former Super Bowl champion quarterback, sat back in their seat and “ooohed and ahhed” amidst the back and forth.
“Oh, OK! That’s my bad,” Carr said repeatedly, while seemingly surrendering with his hands in the air.
“Shout out to Claire Kittle out there,” Chex added.
Carr’s joke was bizarre for a number of reasons, with the most obvious being that Kittle and Claire have been married since April 2019 after dating throughout college at Iowa.
Kittle is also good friends with Kelce, and the two founded Tight End University together with the retired Greg Olsen in 2021 — an immersive three-day program that brings tight ends together for a variety of activities including film study, on-field drills, recovery, rehabilitation and more.
Carr’s cringeworthy moment came when the hosts were naming their choice for “who’s going to steal the show at Super Bowl opening night” — before the reigning champion Chiefs face the 49ers in the big game on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium.
Some fans weren’t keen on the joke.
“What a weirdo,” one X user wrote, while another added, “Is their a Carr that isn’t insufferable?”
Swift — who has a concert in Tokyo the night before the big game — is expected to attend Super Bowl 58.
