Jigra director Vasan Bala holds himself ‘responsible’ for Alia Bhatt starrer’s debacle at box-office; ‘Something has happened where people…’

“Jigra director Vasan Bala takes ownership for Alia Bhatt starrer’s box-office failure, admits to a mistake:”

Director Vasan Bala recently took responsibility for the failure of the film Jigra, starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina. He mentioned that something did not attract the audience to the theaters to watch their film, leading to its debacle.

In a conversation with Fever FM, Vasan Bala addressed the fact that Jigra was Alia Bhatt’s “lowest box office opener.” He expressed that Alia is a top choice for everyone and could have been on any other film set but chose to do Jigra. Bala accepted responsibility for the film’s underperformance as Alia trusted him with her choice.

“So it is my responsibility to deliver at the box office because we are in the business of filmmaking. I need to analyze what went wrong, why people stayed away, what they didn’t connect with, and why they did not feel the need to come to the theater,” he explained.

Vasan Bala mentioned in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the film’s failure at the box office was a surprise to him. He emphasized that they did not intend to fail and thought the film with universal emotions would be well-received. However, he admitted that he let down the producers Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt with the film’s underperformance.

The filmmaker deactivated his X account after being criticized by internet users for defending the film’s failure rather than accepting it. Jigra, a jailbreaker thriller-drama, follows the story of two orphans and was released on October 11, 2024, backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Alia Bhatt’s Eternal Sunshine Productions.

Despite minimal competition, Jigra only collected Rs 22 crore in its first week at the box office, according to Pinkvilla’s figures.
