David Spade Reveals Audience Perceptions of His SNL Characters; Find Out Here!

David Spade discussed his experience on Saturday Night Live and shared that many people believed his SNL characters were gay. While appearing on the Fly on the Wall podcast, the comedian revealed that audience members would inquire about the sexuality of the characters he portrayed on the show.

Spade recounted, “I did a character called Receptionist, where I was just being really aloof to people. People would ask me, ‘Who’s that gay character you play?'”

The actor-comedian mentioned that individuals even thought his mother believed he was gay in real life, besides the characters he played on the show. Reflecting on this, Spade humorously remarked, “She thought I was coming out. When I look back, I’m like, Yeah, I see it.”

Regarding his other characters, Spade mentioned that there were roles where he didn’t explicitly identify famous personalities like MC Hammer. In one sketch, Hammer asks to be addressed as himself, prompting Spade’s character to question the reason for recognition.

The podcast host, Dana Carvey, who played President Joe Biden and was a former SNL star, explained that Spade’s receptionist character wasn’t about representing a particular sexual orientation, but rather a unique personality trait.

Carvey elaborated, “It’s just languorous, not any sexual orientation.”

Apart from the receptionist, Spade is also known for portraying Dennis Finch, an executive assistant who pursued cheerleading in college and was assumed to be gay by his father.

Before landing a role on Just Shoot Me!, Spade was a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1996. He later appeared in various films with his former sketch comedy colleagues, such as Tommy Boy alongside Chris Farley, Joe Dirt with Dennis Miller, and the Hotel Transylvania series alongside Adam Sandler.
