Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs seeks trial in spring 2025 for sex trafficking charges as legal team makes 3rd appeal in bail decision
Sean “Diddy” Combs is making a third appeal in his effort to be released from jail. The music mogul, 54, has been in custody since his arrest on September 16 on charges of sex trafficking and other federal offenses. He has pleaded not guilty. Combs’s legal team is also requesting a trial date in April or May 2025.
On October 8, his lawyers asked an appellate judge to consider releasing him on appropriate bail conditions. This includes a $50 million bail agreement that prohibits witness tampering. Combs’s attorneys argue that the district court’s decision was based on speculation and that the media coverage of his case has distorted the facts.
In a separate filing, Combs’s lawyers are pushing for a speedy trial and are seeking a trial date in the spring. Legal experts are analyzing the implications of his third appeal request.
Trial date requested
The defense and prosecution have outlined the issues they plan to address at an upcoming hearing before Judge Arun Subramanian, who is expected to preside over Combs’s trial. This hearing is separate from the bail appeal being heard by a different court.
Combs’s legal team is asking for a trial date in April or May 2025. The government has stated its availability for trial as determined by the court.
The question of whether Combs will remain in custody or be under house arrest at his Miami mansion until the trial is still uncertain.
Why the appellate court is different — and why it could matter
Criminal defense lawyer Mark Reichel explains that the appellate court provides a more focused environment for legal analysis compared to the trial court. However, the standard of review is limited to substantial errors made by the lower court.
Combs’s motion ‘makes a compelling point’
Reichel believes Combs’s bail proposal is strong, emphasizing the security measures and monitoring outlined in the $50 million bond agreement. Celebrity lawyer Chris Melcher also finds it surprising that Combs was not granted bail with such conditions.
Is the 3rd time the charm for Combs?
Legal experts suggest that it is unlikely Combs will be released after his previous bail requests were denied. Despite the compelling bail package, the appellate court is expected to uphold prior rulings.
Looking ahead
The upcoming hearing is expected to address extensive evidence related to the case. The government has already provided search warrants and other materials requested by the defense.
