“Helene served as a wake-up call,” Castor said, referring to Hurricane Helene’s recent devastation. “This is truly catastrophic, and I can say with absolute seriousness: if you decide to remain in one of those evacuation areas, you are putting your life at risk.”
The mayor emphasized that her main message to residents is that they must prepare if they have not already done so.
“Take all necessary precautions and then evacuate the designated areas, which currently include zones A and B,” she advised. “Remember, shelter from the wind and flee from the water. We are facing the potential of a direct hit with a 10- to 12-foot storm surge. To put that into perspective, Hurricane Helene brought a 6-foot storm surge to the Tampa Bay area just a week ago, and that caused immense devastation to our coastal regions.”
