Dionne Warwick Corrects Misinterpretation of Sabrina Carpenter Lyric: ‘It Was Meant as a Joke’
Fame can have both positive and negative impacts on artists, as seen with Sabrina Carpenter and Dionne Warwick. Recently, Warwick made a controversial comment regarding Carpenter’s lyrics, sparking a significant reaction. In an NPR interview segment called “Nobody Asked for This (But I’m Gonna Tell You Anyhow),” Warwick shared her thoughts on some songs.
On September 27, Warwick rated viral tracks from artists like Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Kendrick Lamar, and Sabrina Carpenter on the X platform using ‘Dionnes’ on a scale from one to five.
Warwick praised Sabrina’s “Please, Please, Please” with four and a half Dionnes, but was less impressed with Carpenter’s “Espresso” song. She mentioned in the interview that she couldn’t relate to lyrics like “I’m working late ’cause I’m a singer” by Carpenter.
Despite this, Warwick acknowledged Sabrina’s talent and potential in the music industry. She also clarified that her comments were meant to be light-hearted and not taken out of context.
She emphasized that her remarks were in jest and expressed her best wishes for Sabrina’s success and longevity as a young artist. Warwick also criticized the media for focusing on sensationalized headlines instead of more substantial content.
Warwick commended Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” for its originality and compared it to an ‘ABBA feeling.’ She also rated Charli XCX’s song “Guess” with four Dionnes. Despite not understanding “Brat Summer,” Warwick humorously considered herself possibly being a brat. She also showed indifference towards the Drake vs Kendrick Lamar feud.
