Actor Nathan Lane argues that Lyle and Erik Menendez should be given a retrial after serving 35 years.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story has sparked conversation about the Menendez family, with one brother criticizing the series and Nathan Lane sharing his thoughts on the case.
In his role as journalist Dominick Dunne, Lane believes the Menendez brothers deserve a new trial after serving 35 years. He mentioned that the attention the case is receiving could work in their favor.
Despite Erik and Lyle’s discomfort with how they were portrayed in the series, Lane suggested that it may ultimately benefit them. He acknowledged that modern-day jurors, more aware of abuse, might view the case differently than those in the past.
Reflecting on the brothers’ first trial in 1993 and their subsequent conviction in 1995, Lane recalled the public perception of them as murderers due to their initial lies and spending spree.
While Erik and Lyle are serving life sentences without parole at a correctional facility in San Diego, Erik recently criticized the series’ portrayal of his brother and accused it of spreading misinformation. In response, Lane emphasized that the series is a dramatization, not a documentary.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story depicts the brothers’ murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, with actors Cooper Koch, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Javier Bardem, and Chloë Sevigny in key roles.
